OVERVIEW

Vowel sounds can be long or short. Long vowels can be made with a single letter or a digraph (two letters making one sound). The sound of e in bed is a short vowel sound. The sound of ee in feet is a long vowel sound.

First, choose the correct word to match to the image. Next, write S if the vowel is short or write L if the vowel is long. This activity has also been designed for handwriting practice.

Common Core Alignment:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.3.B Associate the long and short sounds with the common spellings (graphemes) for the five major vowels.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.2.A Distinguish long from short vowel sounds in spoken single-syllable words.
